Teddy Swims Oakland Concert reviews
Barry's still got it!!
Teddy Swims, a man still amazingly on top of his game, is within less than a decade of the average life expectancy of an American man. After undergoing hip surgery, I took my mother to see him at Radio City for his first of three postponed shows. She had seen him once before way back when he was getting started, and I thought this may be one of her last opportunities to see him again. Concerned that he may be too old to put up a good performance worthy of his fame (think Bob Dylan), she was almost convinced not to go. Now, it's clear to us that there will be plenty more opportunities. He still dances, makes the ladies scream, and belts it out to the back row. His voice betrays his age far more than his ability to perform, but all in all, he looks good and sounds great. His voice has certainly not suffered the ravages of time, and he still carries a refrain in a way artists half his age can only dream about. It's clear that he has the will to perform. It's obvious that he genuinely loves to perform and has a very profound connection with his catalogue.
The production was superb beyond his performance. The band and his singers were on point, and the sound and lighting were what you would expect from a world-class venue. Throughout the evening, the vignettes they did highlighting his career created a very intimate experience that felt more like a celebration of a living body of work than a eulogy for a washed-up music icon. Something you could still get on board with after all these years. For me, the best was when they played a very endearing recording he made with his grandfather when he was a young boy in an old record-your-own-voice booth before rededicating "I Am Your Child" to him. But maybe that was because I was there with my mama (hey ma!). From a performance standpoint, he earned a firm place in my concert-going memory when he came in over a television recording of his from the 70's and started duetting himself!! That was truly inspired.
Superb energy, humor, and ability to reach out and touch his audience - Give 'em hell, Teddy Swims. You still got it.
